“James Joyce and Revolutions: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Havana 1964” – A Talk by Teresa Caneda Cabrera

For the third instalment in our Spring / Summer 2019 Lecture Series , we were delighted to welcome Dr. Teresa Caneda Cabrera to the James Joyce Centre to deliver her talk on the role played by the 1964 Cuban translation of Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in Cuban revolutionary politics.

Teresa’s fascinating talk detailed the climate of Cuban politics in the 1960s and the ways in which Joyce was invoked as a role model for colonial writing. Within this context, she outlined the importance of the 1964 Cuban translation of Joyce’s 1916 novel and the pivotal role it played for Cuban intellectuals who were attempting to re-situate Ireland and Cuba within a larger map of sister nations, sharing histories of anti-imperialistic struggles. The talk demonstrated how, through the 1964 translation in Havana,
Joyce was introduced to Cuban readers as a model, “a writer who has much in common with the social circumstances of Latin-American writers

Dr. Teresa Caneda Cabrera is a Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Vigo (Spain), currently on a research stay, as a visiting associate professor, at UCD School of English, Drama and Film. Since January 2018 she is the Principal Investigator of the research project “Inconvenient Truths: Cultural Practices of Silence in Contemporary Irish Fiction” funded by Spain’s Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness.
